September 18, 2026 • Mowing & Mulching
Mowing seems like the simplest part of lawn care, but it's also where some of the most common — and most damaging — mistakes happen. Cutting too short or skipping too many weeks between mows can undo a lot of the good work put into fertilization and watering.
Grass blades are where photosynthesis happens, and cutting them too short reduces a lawn's ability to produce the energy it needs to grow strong roots. For most cool-season grasses common in the Peoria area, keeping mowing height around 3 to 3.5 inches — especially through the heat of summer — shades the soil, holds moisture better, and crowds out weed seedlings that need sunlight to germinate.
A good rule of thumb is never removing more than about a third of the grass blade's height in a single mow. Letting grass grow too long between cuts and then scalping it back down in one pass stresses the plant and can leave clippings thick enough to smother the lawn underneath if left in place.
Grass grows fastest in spring and slows down in the heat of summer, which means mowing frequency should follow growth rate rather than a fixed weekly schedule. A lawn that needs mowing every 5 days in May might only need it every 10-12 days in the peak of a hot, dry August — mowing on a rigid schedule regardless of growth either scalps a slow-growing lawn or lets a fast-growing one get away from you.
Mowing height and timing matter as much as fertilization for a healthy lawn — a taller, well-timed mow does more for weed resistance and drought tolerance than most homeowners realize.
