By mid-July, Central Illinois lawns are usually a few weeks into the hottest, driest stretch of the year, and it shows — grass that was thick and green in May can start looking tired, dull, or even going dormant by August. Watering more isn't always the right answer, and watering wrong can waste a lot of water without actually helping.
A lawn watered lightly every day develops shallow roots that stay near the surface, chasing that daily moisture — which makes it more vulnerable to drought stress, not less. Watering deeply (about an inch per week, including rainfall) but less often trains roots to grow deeper in search of moisture, which is exactly what helps a lawn ride out a dry stretch without struggling.
Watering early in the morning gives grass blades time to dry out during the day, which reduces the risk of fungal disease that thrives in lawns that stay wet overnight. Evening watering, while tempting after a hot day, leaves turf damp through the night — exactly the conditions many lawn diseases need.
Cool-season grasses in the Peoria area are built to survive short dry spells by going dormant — turning brown and pausing growth rather than dying outright. As long as dormancy doesn't stretch on for many weeks straight, most lawns green back up once regular rain or watering resumes, so a stretch of tan grass in late July isn't necessarily something to panic over.
Getting through summer without wasting water comes down to watering deeply and in the morning, and not overreacting to a lawn that's doing exactly what cool-season grass is built to do in a dry stretch.
